When I was three months old Salvador Allende was killed in a military coup, supported by the U.S. For seventeen years right-wing Pinochet was dictator, stepping down my senior year in Chile. Years later I am surprised and pleased to find this monument in front of Palacio de La Moneda, the historic presidential palace. |

Looking at Allende's face moved me, and I stood there several moments. Is it ever right to kill a man for his ideas? Ideas are powerful things. |

Casey had to try the mote con huesillo. Its a sweet nectar-like summer drink made with dried peaches (huesillo), cooked in sugar, water, cinnamon, mixed when cool with cooked husked wheat (mote). Very typical. |
